The bed bug has an oval, flattened body with long slender antennae and beak-like mouthparts adapted for piercing skin and sucking blood. They tend to be brown to reddish-brown, flat, oval ,and have microscopic hairs that give them a banded appearance. Adults grow to 4–5 mm (0.16–0.20 in) long and 1.5–3 mm (0.059–0.118 in) wide, bedbugs have a single pair of wings, which span 8-10 mm (0.31-0.39 in). Their abdomens bear eight segmented cerci, bedbugs have a multi-segmented beak and feed on both bed bugs and bat bugs.
Bed bugs feed on blood as their only source of nutrition. In order to mature into adults, they must feed once during each of their immature stages. Adult females also need blood in order to produce eggs. Although bedbugs do bite humans, they are not known to transmit diseases to people
