Termite Facts & Information

How To Identify & Control Termite

Latin Name
Isoptera
Appearance
What do Termite look like?

Termites have pale brown to white bodies with a darker head and have no waist between the thorax and abdomen. The antennae have bead-like segments. The non-reproductive forms never develop wings, are blind, and have thin skin that makes them vulnerable to drying out. Reproductive forms have two pairs of equal-sized wings, one pair of compound eyes and a thicker skin that protects them better from drying out when exposed.

HOW I DID GET TERMITES

Termites invade homes by crossing from their colonies in yards to foundations. Cracks or gaps around pipes and wires give the pests access inside. Homeowners can also get termites from:

  • Wooden structures, like porches and decks, in direct contact with the ground.
  • Stacks of firewood that lean against the house.
  • Damp soil near foundations from leaking faucets, gutters, or downspouts.
  • Trees and shrubs planted close to the building.
  • Above ground locations in the house that remain damp enough to support termites without them needing to return to the moist conditions found in the soil

How Serious Are Termites?

A termite infestation and damage can be devastating to your home or property. Termites are often called the “silent destroyer” because they may be secretly hiding and thriving in your home or yard without any immediate signs of damage. All termites consume cellulose-based plant materials. Unfortunately, all homes, regardless of their construction type, can provide cellulose food for termite infestation.

There are three major types of termites

  • Subterranean
  • Drywood
  • Dampwood

TERMITES FACTS

  • They never sleep. Termites build their colonies 24 hours a day, every day.
  • Termite colonies are big. The largest termite colony ever recorded contained over three million termites!
  • Ants and termites are enemies. In fact, ants are the number one predators and competition for termites
  • Termites are eusocial. This means that they live in a caste system, where each caste has a different role.
  • Some queens in certain termite species can lay 15 to 25 eggs per minute. This adds up to over 40,000 termite eggs per day!
