Heavy footsteps across the ceiling at dusk. Thumping, hissing, a scramble up the downpipe at 4am. If something big has moved into your roof void, it is very likely a brushtail possum, and getting it out has to be done the lawful way.
OCG handles possum removal, trapping and proofing across Liverpool, Casula and South West Sydney. We find how it got in, remove it lawfully, and seal the entry so the roof stays yours.
Possums are protected native animals in NSW under the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016. Trapping one requires a licence, and a trapped possum must be released unharmed after sunset, on the same property and within 150 metres of where it was caught. It cannot be kept in a trap for more than 24 hours, it cannot be driven to the bush and dumped, and anyone offering that is offering you a fine.
A possum in the roof is a protected animal with an eviction notice, not a pest with a death sentence. That is why proofing is the real job. Remove the possum without sealing the entry and the same possum, or the next one, is back within days, because your roof void is warm, dry and safe, which is exactly what it is looking for.
The older homes in Lurnea, Warwick Farm and the Liverpool CBD streets have terracotta roofs where one slipped tile or a lifted ridge cap is an open door. The newer estates in Prestons, Edmondson Park and Austral have Colorbond roofs that possums enter through eave gaps and unsealed service penetrations. In Chipping Norton and Moorebank, overhanging trees along the river and canal lines are the highway onto the roof. We work these suburbs every week and we know where to look.
Both live in roof voids and people regularly guess wrong. A possum is heavy, you hear distinct footsteps, mostly around dusk and dawn, often one set. Rats are light, fast scratching and gnawing that runs most of the night in more than one spot. It matters because the treatments are completely different and rat baits must never be used where a possum is present. Not sure which you have? Describe the noise when you call and we will tell you what it points to, or read about our rat and mouse control.
Not without a licence. Possums are protected in NSW and trapping without one risks a penalty. Licensed removal with proofing costs less than the fine.
No, and no one lawfully can. The licence conditions require release unharmed, after sunset, on the same property and within 150 metres of the capture point. That is exactly why sealing the entry is the part that solves the problem.
Priced after we inspect the roof and find the entry points, because the proofing work varies with the roof. No call out fee, and you get the price before any work starts.
We are open 24 hours, 7 days across Liverpool, Casula and South West Sydney. Call and we will give you the earliest time we can.
Not through the entry we sealed. Proofing is the point of the job, and if we missed an entry point we come back and fix it.
Tell us what you are hearing and when. We will tell you whether it sounds like a possum, what the lawful fix is, and what it takes.
